Abstract

Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The number of patients who do not succeed in recovering due to non-compliance in taking drugs resulting in antibiotic resistance that starts from simple such as monoresistent, polyresistent, Multi Drug Resistant (MDR), and Extensively Drug Resistant (XDR). MDR TB (Multidrug Resistant Tuberculosis) is one type of TB resistant to OAT (Anti-Tuberculosis Drugs) with at least 2 of the most potent anti- tuberculosis drugs, rifampicin and Isoniazid. This study aims to find out the side effects of Kanamycin use in the treatment of MDR TB patients at Jayapura Hospital. The type of research used was non-experimental with descriptive design. Data collection was carried out retrospectively in December 2019 at Jayapura Hospital with a sample of 40 people. The results showed MDR-TB patients prescribed kanamycin consisted of the early adult age group (17-35 years) with 26 patients (65%), followed by the end adult age group (36-45 years) with 10 patients (25%), and the elderly (56-65 years) with 4 patients (10%). Female patients were 24 (60%), while men accounted for 16 patients (40%). Duration of suffering from TB from 12-18 months were 20 patients (50%) and 19-24 months as many as 20 patients (50%). The most widely used dose of kanamycin was 500 mg with 25 patients (62.5%) with the most length of use of 19-24 months as many as 23 people (57.5%). From the 26 patients (65%) who experienced side effects, the most common were hearing loss (deafness and buzzing ears) as many as 18 people (60%), followed by nausea and vomiting with 8 people (27%) and seizures as many as 4 people (13%). From the results of this study, it can be concluded that the most common side effects of Kanamycin are hearing loss (deafness and buzzing ears).
