Abstract

Betel nut plant (Areca catechu L.) is one of the plants that have antibacterial activity. Betel nut contains alkaloid compounds, flavonoids, tannins, saponins, and polyphenols that are known to be efficacious as antibacterials. One of the bacteria that most commonly contaminates the skin of the hands is Staphylococcus aureus. The spread of Staphylococcus aureus is most often transmitted from hand to hand. Research shows that betel nut infusions can inhibit bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus. Hand sanitizer is a gel with various contents that quickly kill microorganisms in the skin of the hands. Polymers that can be used as gel bases are carboxyvinyl polymers or carbopols. The purpose of this study was to find out the physical quality of betel nut infusa hand sanitizer gel (Areca catechu L.) with variations in carbopol consensual, among others 1%, 1.5%, and 2%. This research is a type of laboratory experimental research to make hand gel preparations. The method used in this study is the method of extraction of betel nut infusa (Areca catechu L.). The results showed that the preparation of hand sanitizer gel infused betel nut (Areca catechu L.) in formulas 1, 2 and 3 meets the physical quality of the gel. Based on the results of evaluations that have been conducted in all three preparations, hand sanitizer gel preparations in formula 1 with a carbopol concentration of 1% have the best results seen from organoleptis test results, have a pH of 6, homogeneous preparations with even color and no particles, a spread of 6 cm and a clinging test of 47 seconds.
